Canada Study Permit Requirements and Application Process

A study permit is required for most foreign nationals wishing to study at designated learning institutions (DLIs) in Canada. This document, issued by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), grants eligible students the authorization to study in Canada.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for a Canadian study permit, applicants must:

– Be enrolled at a DLI in Canada.
– Prove they have sufficient funds to cover tuition, living expenses, and return transportation for themselves and any accompanying family members.
– Have no criminal record and provide a police certificate if requested.
– Be in good health and undergo a medical examination if required.
– Convince an immigration officer of their intention to leave Canada when their study permit expires.

Required Documents

Applicants need the following documents for a study permit application:

1. Proof of Acceptance: An official letter of acceptance (LOA) from a DLI in Canada. Include either the original or an electronic copy of the LOA.

2. Provincial or Territorial Attestation Letter: Most applicants need a provincial or territorial attestation letter.

3. Proof of Identity: A valid passport or travel document.

4. Proof of Financial Support: Evidence showing sufficient funds to cover expenses during the stay in Canada.

Accepted Proof of Funds

Proof of funds may include:

– A Canadian bank account in the applicant’s name (if funds have been transferred to Canada).
– A Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) from a Canadian financial institution.
– Proof of a student loan or educational loan.
– Bank statements from the past 4 months.
– A bank draft in Canadian dollars.
– Proof of tuition and housing fee payments.
– A letter confirming financial support from an individual or organization, or
– Proof of funding from within Canada, such as scholarships or Canadian-funded educational programs.

If the applicant’s country enforces foreign exchange controls, additional proof may be needed to show they can export funds to cover their expenses.

Additional Documentation

Some applicants may also need:

– Letter of Explanation: A personal statement outlining the purpose of study and study plans.
– Medical Exam: Conducted by an IRCC-approved panel physician, if required.
– Police Clearance Certificate

Each application is assessed individually, so applicants should ensure they meet all requirements and include the necessary documents.
