Eligibility for Canadian Citizenship
To apply for Canadian citizenship, most applicants must meet the following criteria:
Permanent Resident Status
All applicants, regardless of age, must have permanent resident (PR) status in Canada. Review your PR documents to confirm your eligibility.
– A valid PR card is not necessary; applications can be submitted with an expired PR card.
Residency Requirement
Lived in Canada for at Least 3 Out of the Last 5 Years (1,095 Days)
– You need to have been physically present in Canada for at least 1,095 days (3 years) in the 5 years before signing your application.
– It’s recommended to apply with more than the minimum days to avoid issues with the calculation.
– Some time in Canada as a temporary resident or protected person may count, as well as time spent outside Canada if you or a family member were Crown servants.
Income Tax Filing
– You may need to have filed taxes in Canada for at least 3 of the last 5 years before applying.
Language Skills
– Applicants aged 18 to 54 must show adequate knowledge of English or French by demonstrating that they can:
– Participate in everyday conversations on common topics
– Understand basic instructions, questions, and directions
– Use basic grammar, sentence structures, and common vocabulary
– These skills are equivalent to level 4 of the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) for English or the Niveaux de compétence linguistique canadien (NCLC) for French.
Citizenship Test
Applicants between 18 and 54 years old must pass a test on topics such as:
– Rights and responsibilities of Canadian citizens
– Canada’s history, geography, economy, government, laws, and symbols
– After submitting your application, you’ll be invited to take the test.
Take the Oath of Citizenship
– If you’re at least 14 years old when signing your application, you must take the oath upon approval of your application.
Prohibitions: Legal Restrictions
– If you’ve committed a crime in or outside Canada, you may be temporarily ineligible to apply for Canadian citizenship.
– Time spent in prison, on parole, or on probation does not count toward your residency requirement.
– Review situations that might prevent citizenship eligibility, and consult a lawyer or the arresting officer if you are unsure if they apply to you.
– Wait until any prohibitive conditions no longer apply before applying, as applications are reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
